Unlocking the Key to Living Better: Creating a Personal Vision for Success
You need to know who you are becoming to live your best life. Create your personal vision now.
Read time: 2 minutes
Your identity is what you'll become. It's that important.
Taking the time to craft who you are and who you are becoming is more important than almost everything else in your life. You will be drifting in life until you know your values, what you believe, and where you are going. You'll remain common and forgotten.
"First say to yourself what you would be; then do what you have to do."
Recently, I created another identity for myself. It's 3 years out as recommended in the book Vivid Vision by Cameron Herold. This version of myself that I'm working toward covers all areas of life - family, relationships, contribution, adventure, lifestyle, financial, etc. It's comparable to a software engineering roadmap.
With the 3 year vision in place, I then thought through who I needed to become to make the entire vision come to life. This was when I got in touch with that version of me 3 years into the future. He's already accomplished the entire vision. The more I can connect with this version of myself, the more confident I am in my vision. This begins to create my identity.
My identity is that 3-year version of myself. He is calm, joyful, and grateful for everything he has brought to life. His values are on point, and he lives by them daily. He is my higher self that I strive to become every day. I'll work to become this man every day for the next 3 years.
Here's the process I took to create my identity. It may not be perfect, and someone might find something wrong with it, but this worked for me. Hopefully, it helps.
Create a 3-year vision
I recommend reading Vivid Vision by Cameron Herold to understand what we're discussing here. The book focuses on business but goes into a life vision in one chapter. Here are the areas of my life that I included in my vision
Health/Nutrition
Family
Relationships
Spiritual/Contribution
Lifestyle/Adventure
Personal Growth/Intellectual
Financial
Environment
Business
Think through who you need to become to pull off everything in your vision
Now that you have what you want to be, do, and have in 3 years, spend some time creating the future version of you who pulled everything off. He/She accomplished everything in your vision. List their demeanor, habits, thoughts, physical appearance, peer group, etc. This is your higher self.
Visualize this version of yourself every day
Once you have your higher self-identified, visualize this person and who they are daily. The more detailed you can get in your visualizations, the better. Once you have a good sense of your higher self, begin drawing them in. Connect with them before you do a task, have a meeting, meet someone new, take on a new project, etc. They will help guide you toward your vision in each moment.
This may seem woo-woo. I can assure you it's not. Successful people do this all the time. Some may articulate this differently, and others may be afraid to share it because it's the first step to becoming great at anything.
